For some people nail art can be an intimidating aspect of at home manicures for a lot of people. Many people think that because they don’t have a lot of experience drawing, illustrating, or painting in the traditional sense that they will not be able to create art for their nails, but this is far from the truth!
What is Blooming Gel?
There are lots of different ways that people can create nail art while having minimal experience in other types of visual arts. One of my favourite ways to add a bit of flare to press on nails is by using what is called “Blooming Gel”.
Blooming gel is a type of clear gel polish that allows for drops of colours to be applied and spread across the nail. This allows for designs and patterns to be easily created using the natural flow on the polish.
How to Use Blooming Gel:
- In order to use Blooming gel you will need a UV lamp to cure the polish, along with a gel basecoat, topcoat, and coloured gel polishes.
- First you will place your basecoat on the press-on tip and cure under the lamp.
- Then you will place the desired background/base colour for the nail, and cure again.
- Apply a layer of blooming gel on top and before curing add drops of coloured polish using either a dotting tool or a brush to create the desired pattern. Once the colour has spread to the desired amount, cure the nail under the lamp. If you would like to add more layers or different colours you will repeat this process again.
- After you have achieved the desired design, add your topcoat and cure the nail under the UV lamp.
Keep In Mind…
Blooming gel is very easy to work with but there are a few things to keep in mind when using it:
- Because of the thickness of the blooming gel itself, using multiple layers can cause the press-on to become quite thick. This could also lead the press-on nail to have an abnormal surface texture, so be cautious of how thick your layers of blooming gel are, along with how much coloured polish you add with each drop.
- The blooming gel spread the polish across the nail, and in order to create bold effects you will need to use an opaque polish. Glitter and shimmer polishes tend to lead to less effective results.
- The longer you leave the uncured polish, the more the colour will spread. Be aware of how long you leave the nails before curing them to make sure the coloured polish is spreading the desired amount. I have made the mistake of working on multiple nails at once and by the time they are already cured, the first one I did had spread beyond what my intended pattern was.
Blooming gel is an extremely beginner friendly introduction into creating unique designs for your press-on nails. I have been using this gel for quite some time, and I still have so much fun experimenting with the different designs that can be created.
